Motorcycle Repair Invoice Template

A motorcycle repair invoice records the labor and material costs that went into repairing or maintaining a customer’s new or vintage motorcycle, moped, dirt bike, or similar small-engine vehicles. Depending on the mechanic’s preferences, services can be performed as an upfront charge (materials included) or on an hourly basis. A motorcycle repair shop can be a certified dealer, a small business with one (1) to a few technicians, or a part-time mechanic or handyman working on the side. Due to the varying nature of motorcycles and small engine repair, it’s common for technicians to focus on a certain type of bike, such as “sport bikes,” “vintage café,” or a particular brand being “Honda” or “Ducati.”

How to Become a Motorcycle Mechanic

While not mandatory, those that are interested in becoming a motorcycle mechanic often have an interest in working with their hands and have a passion for riding two-wheeled vehicles. Upon earning a High School diploma or GED, the trainee should look at applying for formal training, and finally receiving one (1) or more certifications to begin working. The steps below are the recommended course of action, although it should be noted that there is no singular path to becoming a small engine motorcycle technician or mechanic.

Step 1 – High School diploma or GED

Earning a diploma or GED is an essential step for aspiring technicians, as it is regularly a requirement among motorcycle technician schools and institutes. Holding a valid driver’s license (with an accompanying motorcycle license) is also a common prerequisite. During high school, students should focus on taking as many shop classes as possible, with math and business-focused classes being advocated as well.

Step 2 – Receive Formal Motorcycle Technician Training

For receiving comprehensive training on small engine repair, diagnosing problems, and understanding a wide array of complex systems, high school graduates should look at applying to motorcycle technician institutes, vocational schools, and community colleges. For more advanced training, prospective mechanics can earn their Associates Degree, which requires an average of two (2) years of study alongside a rigorous courseload.

Step 3 – Obtain Certifications (if desired or required)

Certifications may be required by the state in which repair work will be conducted, or by the exact brand of motorcycle. When in school, guidance counselors and teachers can point to specific certifications and give their personal recommendations according to the student’s desired career path.
