An artist invoice is for those that manifest their creativity in the creation of art, whether it is through the providing of a service or product. If a service has been completed, the artist will commonly be paid by the hour ($/hr) versus a product where it’s per item. Unless the parties agree otherwise, the artist will send the invoice to the client when the service or product has been completed. Payment is usually due upon receipt.

What is an Artist?

An artist is a person who produces digital or physical works of art. Whether a creation can be classified as artwork or not is largely based upon an individual’s preferences – although it can be considered that anything that takes a considerable amount of craftsmanship, ingenuity, and/or creativity can be considered a form of art. Typically, visual art is most often associated with the field of art, although applied and performing arts are also considered to be branches of the profession in their own right. The following are common fields that are classified under visual art:

  • Painting
  • Drawing
  • Sculpting
  • Printmaking
  • Ceramic making
  • Photography
  • Digital
  • Makeup
  • Tattooing

Where can an Artist Sell Their Work?

Artists sell their creations in studios, exhibitions, fairs, and auctions. More frequently artists are turning to online marketplaces such as Etsy, Redbubble, Society6, and ArtPal to increase the potential consumers of their art to a wider audience. When pricing products online, setting a price that both reflects the countless hours that have gone into a product, while simultaneously being realistic as to what someone will pay for it is essential. To make pricing easier and more consistent, Lori with the Artist’s Network provides a practical formula that can be used to price paintings, although variations of the formula can be used for other art types.
