Post Office (US Postal) Passport Service
The USPS (United States Postal Service) is the standard service for accepting passport applications for the United States Department of State. For first-time passport applicants, the application must be applied for in-person at a USPS location with passport services. An appointment may be necessary which can be made online. Those looking to renew or replace a lost or stolen passport may mail their application directly to the US Department of State. The wait time from beginning to end can take up to 4-6 weeks. Applicants must bring the following to the post office when applying for a passport:
- Required U.S. Passport Forms – Forms should be filled out but not signed. Signing needs to be witnessed by a post office employee.
- Passport Photos – Your local CVS or Walgreens typically has a service to take passport photos.
- A money order payable to the “U.S. Department of State”
- A photocopy of a state-issued ID
Expedited Passport Service
The USPS offers an expedited service that will deliver a passport in 2-3 weeks from the submission of an application. The fees for doing so are slightly higher. The USPS’ fee calculator can be used to get an idea as to what the fees will cost. There are also many other third-party companies that offer expedited services. These services will issue an invoice before starting on an application. 1-2 day expedited processing typically costs in the range of $200 – $300 dollars. Common expedited passport services:
Same Day Passport Service
The US Department of State reserves the same day passport service only for life-or-death emergencies where they will do everything in their power to produce a passport for someone in an emergency. For example – a U.S. citizen is traveling outside the United States and is a victim of a natural disaster with life-threatening injuries. Due to the disaster, all of their personal belongings were lost and damaged, including their passport. In this situation, they could try to order a passport that day in order to return to the US quickly to treat their injuries.
