What is Upholstery?

Any type of fabric or decor that covers an object is known as upholstery. Most associate upholstery with the styling and coverings on furniture. If someone were to walk into a furniture shop, they might ask the sales clerk, “what are the upholstery option on this couch?” The clerk would respond with an answer like, “in our inventory, this couch comes in leather and or cotton.” In this case, leather and cotton is the upholstery that would go on the couch. Upholstery can be referred to as a fabric, a style, or even a color that is applied to an item.

How to Clean Upholstery? (Car/Vehicle)

Depending on the type of fabric used as upholstery, the cleaning method and ingredients used will vary. Most upholstery is fixed, meaning that it’s impossible to take the upholstery off an object. This is especially true when it comes to car seats in vehicles or seat cushions in a boat. To take apart the upholstery would mean to destroy the seat which would not do any good. As most know, a leather seat is much easier to clean than a fabric seat but leather is also more expensive. Cleaning stains and messy spills out of fabric requires strong chemicals. Below is a list of simple steps to clean the upholstery off fabric seats.

Step 1 – Gather Cleaning Equipment

It’s not rocket science to clean a mess, you just need the right supplies and be ready to scrub, scrub and scrub! Below are the essential ingredients you will need:

• Interior shampoo – Good for all interior fabrics and carpets. The walls on cars are often made from the same fabric as the carpets.
• Foam Sponge – Used to soak the fabric with cleaning solution.
• Absorbent Cloth – Absorbs the cleaning solution after its been applied to the fabric.
• Bucket of Clean Water – Needed to for rinsing.

Step 2 – Thoroughly Vacuum Entire Vehicle

To prevent further stains and smearing from leftover residue, it’s important to vacuum the area that you are planning to clean. It would be a good idea to bring your car to a car wash/detailing service, as they tend to have high powered vacuums specially made to clean the inside of your car and mats.

Step 3 – Spray Shampoo

It’s important not to mix the cleaning solution with your bucket of water. First spray or apply the cleaning solution to the stain or area. Next take your sponge and begin to scrub veraciously and evenly over the area. When the sponge starts to discolor, rinse in the bucket of water and repeat.

Step 4 – Dry the Seat

The upholstery on your car seat should be very wet at this point after all that scrubbing. It’s equally important to get out all of the moister which will collect additional residue and prevent mold in the future. Use your absorbent cloth and squeeze out the water into the water bucket. Keep repeating until the absorbent cloth stops filling up with water. Air will then take care and dry the remaining moister within the upholstery.
