Gutter Estimate Template

A gutter estimate gives potential customers a sense of what gutter work—including cleaning, maintenance, repair, and installation—will cost. Gutter service providers create estimates by developing a scope of work for the project, then calculating the specific costs to complete that work. The estimate should a reasonable profit margin. While estimate prices do not need to match the final invoice price, providing accurate estimates is a mark of a strong business.

Information to Include in a Gutter Estimate

The following are features of most gutter estimates.

Identifying Information

For any estimate, starting with general information and working toward more specific details makes for an intuitive layout. The following are some things that can be included with general information:

  • Contractor or individual performing the work and contact info
  • Customer or client and contact info
  • Location / address where work is to be performed
  • Work start and end dates
  • Broad description of work (e.g. gutter installation, gutter repair, gutter cleaning, etc.)

Scope of Work

A well-developed scope of work helps to avoid miscommunication and subsequent disagreement between contractor and client. And, it is the foundation upon which the estimate is built. From simple gutter cleaning to complete tear down and reinstallation, the description of work should be as detailed as necessary. Here are some examples that might be used in a gutter estimate:

  • Remove existing gutters and replace with 5″ square, copper seamless gutters, and 3″ downspouts
  • Clean and re-seal existing sectional gutters
  • Clean existing gutters and install gutter guards
  • Replace existing downspouts with rain chains
  • Repair damaged gutter section and paint it to match

Line Items With Associated Costs

Once the scope of work has been established, overall cost can be determined by listing each of the items necessary to complete the job and including their individual costs. Here are some things that might apply to a gutter estimate:

  • Removal and disposal of existing gutters
  • Linear feet to be installed or replaced
  • Gutter material, quantity
  • Downspouts and rain chains, quantity
  • Leader heads, quantity
  • Rain barrels, quantity
  • Hardware
  • Equipment rental
  • Labor cost
  • Profit margin or markup
  • Total cost

Payment Terms and Deposits

Depending upon the size of the job and cost of the material to be used, a deposit may be required. Whatever the arrangement, it should be clearly spelled out in the estimate.

Notes

Notes are useful for including information about warranties, for listing anything that is specifically being excluded from the work, and for identifying anything extraordinary or unusual about the work that should be recorded. Perhaps the client will need to hire a painter after installation, for example.

Gutter Estimate Price Factors

While each gutter service job is unique, there are some issues that are present in many jobs and which can have a substantial impact on project cost.

Rainwater Capture and Containment

Rainwater containment system (rain barrels, cisterns) may be required. In new construction, this will probably be called out in the plans if required. Familiarity with local building codes related to rain water capture and containment requirements may be useful.

Is the Roof Difficult to Access?

Perhaps the structure is located on a hillside, making the edge of the roof difficult to access. Will a cherry picker or bucket truck need to be rented? Will additional labor need to be hired? Be sure to account for any variables that will add to the cost of completing the job and include them in the estimate.

Long Seamless Gutter Runs

Will a particularly long seamless run require additional equipment or hands to install? This should be included in the estimate.
