SEO Estimate Template
An SEO estimate provides a client with a projection of the cost of search engine optimization (SEO) services. Estimates require developing a scope of work that sets out what will be required to complete the project, then assessing and calculating prices for each sub task. From there, a reasonable profit margin may be added to arrive at a total estimated price. Although the price in an SEO estimate is not binding, the best practice in the field is to make an estimate as accurate as possible.

Scope of Work for SEO Services
Because search engine optimization is a relatively broad service, it may be necessary to work closely with a prospective client to clearly define the desired scope of work. The specific services delivered to a client will depend upon the company’s size, age, what products and services it provides, and its owner’s individual goals. Some clients may prefer a hands-off, full-service approach while others will opt for only consulting and then implementing the resulting strategies using existing staff. A good method for defining the scope of work is to first identify the client’s goals and then work backward to determine which type of SEO services will best achieve those goals. In doing so, the appropriate payment model will become apparent.
Payment Models for SEO Services
A payment model will depend upon the scope of work and the SEO strategy developed for a specific client. Whatever the arrangement, transparency is the best policy when developing a payment method. While payment models can vary greatly, they all typically fall into one of two main categories:
- Service-based
- Performance-based
The Service-Based Model
A service-based payment model will typically be some form of flat-rate payment based on the type and extent of services provided. The success (or performance) of some SEO services may not be easily quantifiable. In cases like this, services are best billed at a flat-rate. Here are a few of the ways that SEO services are billed at a flat-rate:
- Hourly consulting
- Monthly Retainer
- Fixed-price contract
The Performance-Based Model
The alternative to service-based payment model is the performance-based payment model. With this model, the client only pays if and when certain measurable goals are achieved. This model is, of course, fairly attractive to prospective clients due to the much lower cost of getting started. Under this type of payment model, some of the metrics used to determine success will include:
- First page web rankings
- Organic traffic
- Revenue
