What is a Music Producer?
A music producer is someone who is responsible for the production of music. In the past, they used to be called record producers for their ability to take music and publish it to records. Now, in the digital world that we live in, we don’t refer to them as records producers as much. A music producer is someone who has a thorough understanding of the way sound (vibrations) waves work. Many musicians today are their own music producers due to the advancement of technology and software; now anyone can create a music studio from their bedroom to produce music. Music producers are essentially modern-day musical conductors. With just the use of their computer, they have access to thousands of instruments as well as sample sounds within their computer to create any kind of music imaginable.
What Does a Music Producer Do?
A music producer does the following:
- Understands the process of sound recording and can produce quality sound from a live recording.
- Has a solid foundation using a DAW (Pro Tools, Logic Pro, Ableton). GarageBand, created by Apple, is the most well know (but is far from the industry standard).
- Knows how to use and play digital instruments – usually with a MIDI keyboard, and can create audio effects.
- Format and distribute music at a high-quality sample rate.
