A locksmith invoice is an electronic or paper document that officially requests payment from a client or a company after a commercial, residential, or automotive locksmith has completed a requested service. Locksmithing services are charged on a per-service basis, although larger or non-typical jobs can include an hourly-based labor charge in addition to or in replace of standard service pricing. Both standard services and hourly labor should be itemized on an invoice, as clarity and organization are essential for building client-locksmith relationships.
What is a Locksmith?
A locksmith is an expert in opening locked doors, safes, homes, windows – essentially anything that locks via mechanical means. Some professionally-trained locksmiths can also gain access to electronic locks, which have seen an increase in popularity in modern times. Additionally, locksmiths cut new keys and repair broken locking systems, with some locksmithing companies offering home security services as well. Overall, the average locksmith can render the following services:
- Changing Locks
- Home lockout service
- Lock (electronic or mechanical) installation
- Lock re-keying
- Broken key extraction
- Car key replacement
- Automotive door unlocking
- Repairing damaged locks
Becoming a Certified Locksmith
Depending on the state in which an individual would like to become a professional locksmith, the process can vary significantly. Generally, the process is apprenticeship (or on-the-job training) → certification → business license. However, as stated before, the process can be shorter or longer depending on the state and aspiring locksmith’s experience. After completing an apprenticeship and gaining significant experience, earning a certification is the next course of action. The standard in locksmithing certifications is the Associated Locksmiths of America (ALOA). They offer three (3) certification levels, which are:
- Certified Registered Locksmith (CRL)
- Certified Professional Locksmith (CPL)
- Certified Master Locksmith (CML)
For more information on the three levels and what it takes to earn each certification, check out the ALOA’s page on the topic here.
