What is Zumba?

Zumba is a type of fitness program that combines dance moves of Latin origin alongside upbeat music in fluctuating levels of intensity, resulting in a type of exercise that burns fat and increases the cardiovascular health of those who regularly practice it. The practice of Zumba is full-body in nature, regularly engaging many of the body’s major and minor muscle groups, including:

  • Core (abdominals / midsection)
  • Legs (quadriceps, hamstrings, and calves)
  • Glutes + hip flexors
  • Upper body (toning through arm movement)

According to a study conducted by the American Council on Exercise (ACE), Zumba burns an average of 9.5 calories per minute; considerably higher than comparable high-intensity fitness programs, including kickboxing and power yoga.

Becoming a Zumba Instructor

To become a Zumba instructor, candidates should 1) have a love of fitness and the art of Zumba, and 2) have a strong desire to help people achieve their fitness goals. According to Zumba.com, the following are the required steps for becoming an instructor of Zumba: Prerequisites: 18 years or older. Ages 15+ with a parent-signed liability form. Training: There are three (3) types of training that can be completed for Zumba certification. They are:

  • Zumba Basic Level 1 – The base-level class; includes everything required to teach a full-fledged Zumba class.
  • Zumba Jump Start Gold – Combines two (2) types of training in one – Zumba Gold and Zumba Basic. Those that take this class learn how to instruct a lower-intensity type of Zumba to seniors and those that can’t engage in more intensive Zumba classes. Class length: ten (10) hours.
  • Jump Start Kids + Kids Jr – Combines both the ‘Zumba Basic 1’ and the ‘Kids & Kids Jr.’ In addition to the basic level of instruction, the class gives instructors the additional knowledge to teach two (2) kids classes; the 4-6 and 7-11 age group classes.

Certification renewal: Completing the basic certification gives instructors with a six (6) month license to teach Zumba classes. To continue teaching, teachers are required to either A) retake one of the classes above, or B) become a ZIN (Zumba Instructor Network) member.
